Introducing Paystack Index
A new way to check out with Paystack merchants through AI agents.

Announcing Paystack Index
For the past two decades, every major shift in computing has changed how people discover, choose, and pay for things.
The web era gave us search. Companies like Google became the starting point for discovering businesses, products, and information online. The mobile era gave us social platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which changed how people found products, trusted recommendations, and made purchasing decisions.
We believe the AI era is creating another major shift: agents.
People are beginning to use AI not just to answer questions, but to take action on their behalf. But while an AI assistant can help you decide what to buy, where to eat, or what task to complete next, most transactions still happen outside the AI interface.
We think that gap is starting to close, and that’s why we built Paystack Index.
What is Paystack index?
Paystack Index is an early access product that lets users check out with Paystack merchants through supported AI agents.
It builds on Paystack’s existing checkout infrastructure by making it possible for people to complete supported commerce tasks directly from AI experiences like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, OpenClaw, and other compatible agents.
A user can ask an agent to buy airtime, send money, top up a wallet, or order food. The AI handles the interaction layer, while Paystack Index connects the request to the right Paystack merchant or supported service, processes the transaction through Paystack rails, and helps the user complete the task without moving between multiple apps.
For users, this creates a new way to shop, pay, and get things done through AI agents. For merchants, it creates another way to be discovered, selected, and paid through Paystack.
What's available at launch?
Paystack Index is starting small, intentionally. At launch, Index is available in Nigeria and supports a focused set of high-frequency commerce flows with a curated set of Paystack merchants and services:
- Airtime and mobile data purchases across major Nigerian networks
- Wallet funding and transfers via Zap by Paystack
- Food ordering through Chowdeck
We’re starting with familiar, high-frequency actions so we can learn how people want to use AI agents to complete real commerce tasks, and how Paystack merchants can show up in these new AI-led checkout experiences.
Why we're launching this now
We believe agents will become an important interface for commerce.
As AI systems become more useful, people will expect them to do more than generate answers. They’ll expect them to help complete real tasks safely and reliably.
For commerce, that means users need secure ways to move from intent to payment. They need to know what actions are available, what they’ve authorized, what payment method is being used, and whether a transaction has been completed successfully.
This is familiar territory for Paystack. Over the years, we’ve helped merchants accept payments through tools like Paystack Checkout and Paystack Storefront. Paystack Index extends that same idea into AI experiences by giving users a new way to check out with Paystack merchants through supported agents.
This matters deeply in African markets, where payments, currencies, regulations, and consumer behavior often look different from the markets where major technology shifts are first designed.
As AI reshapes commerce, we think there’s an opportunity to build for African markets much earlier in the cycle, not as an afterthought.
Paystack Index is our first step in that direction.
Looking ahead
We know we’re still early.
Agentic commerce is just beginning to take shape, and user behavior will continue to evolve. But we think this shift is worth building for now.
Over time, AI agents could help users discover products, compare services, coordinate purchases, manage workflows, and complete transactions across multiple platforms.
Our goal with Paystack Index is to make it easier for Paystack merchants to participate in AI-native commerce, and easier for users to check out with those merchants through the AI experiences they already use. Over time, we want to build the infrastructure that allows AI-native commerce to emerge in African markets in a way that reflects local realities from the beginning.
That’s what we’re building toward.
